As a base we take over an old tower lodge set in its own grounds, this gives us a degree of professional privacy. There is a daily yoga studio nearby and massage facilities for those wishing to partake on site with breakfast and dinner served in the sandy gardens that are raked immaculately each morning and evening. The call to prayer echoes over the thatched roofs of this magical place. Being the oldest continuous trading port between India and Africa, the Indian influences are evident everywhere in the architecture, furniture, brightly coloured clothing and cuisine. Work with the friendly Maasai, paint or photograph the dhows traversing the narrows between Lamu and Manda Islands, and explore all that this rich environment has to offer, in the warmth of the equatorial sun.

There are no vehicles on the island of Lamu, only donkeys that wander through the shaded streets carrying local supplies. Being on the equator means a warm temperature night and day, as a result you are immersed in the scents and sounds of the local community and become aware of a connection to others that is very different from the way we live in our conventional urban lifestyles.

Testimonials

Vicki Zimmer

“Our days were filled with interesting new projects and lots of laughter. We did a bit of everything, drawing, painting and photography”

Michael and his team are very engaging and have a wonderful way of teaching. encouraging us to try new techniques. Pushing our comfort zones without being in any way pushy. I never felt out of my depth even though our group included an art school owner and a very successful and respected iPad artist. Somehow we just morphed into a group of equally creative happy people encouraging each other and enjoying the whole process. Education isn’t about filling you with information. It’s based on the Latin educere, to bring out… This workshop did just that. It brought out and enhanced the creative artist in us.
